September 27, 2010.....
Bluewater got off to a great start in the revamped Keeneland September Yearling Sale, as we sold both our offerings in the opening session, which us the second leading consignor by average, at $400,000.

Hip # 62 photo by Matt GoinsWe sold a Smart Strike colt out of Minister's Mom (Hip # 73) for $475,000 to be one of the Top Ten colts of the session.  He was purchased by Ben Glass, agent, and is pictured at top right.

The filly we sold was by Distorted Humor, out of Last Song and, as Hip # 62, she was purchased by Shadwell Estate Company for $325,000.  She is pictured at left. Hip 481. Photo by Matt Goins.

But, with 78 more yearlings to sell, our work was not done!

In Book 2, we had the highest priced Lawyer Ron yearling of the sale when Mourning Wood purchased our colt out of Cat Dancer for $300,000.  The colt (Hip # 481) was sold as Receiver for Stonewall Farm Stallions 53 LLC and is pictured at right.

September 6, 2010.....  Millionaire Gotta Have Her, who is consigned to the Fasig-Tipton November Sale with Bluewater, today won the Grade 2 Palomar H. at Del Mar for the second year in a row.  The Royal Academy mare (out of Winnowing, by Rahy)  has earned $1,092,608 and this was her fifth graded stakes win.  You can read more about her Palomar win at this link to The Blood-Horse website.   Congratulations to trainer Jenine Sahadi and owner Richard Masson's Green Lantern Stable!

A.P. Indy colt brings $1.2 million at Saratoga

August 3, 2010.....  For the second sale in a row, Bluewater and Southern Equine topped the results as Saratoga Hip # 101, a colt by A.P. Indy, out of Maryfield, was purchased by Todd Pletcher for Ben Leon's Besilu Stables for $1.2 million.  We sold the attractive and athletic colt, which is is the first foal out of 2007 Champion Female Sprinter Maryfield, for Mike Moreno's Southern Equine Stable.

Bluewater sold all five yearlings we offered at the boutique auction, averaging $358,000.  That topped the overall sales average and the 100% sold was (thankfully) a much better sales rate than the 29.8% not-sold experienced by consignors overall.

Maryfield colt photo by SKIP DICKSTEINTodd Pletcher said of the Maryfield colt, "I thought he was the complete package. Conformationally he is a beautiful horse.  He handled himself well and is a good sized first foal.  He has a good walk and is obviously out of champion mare.  He checked off all the boxes in what we were looking for."   For more about our sales topping colt, click here to read the Thoroughbred Daily News account.

Tiz Wonderful Gets Closer to Return (TDN 6/29/2007 pg 9)  After three easy works since returning from injury, Stonestreet Stable's unbeaten Tiz Wonderful (Tiznow) was asked for a bit more yesterday morning. Breezing five furlongs over the main track at Churchill Downs, the three-year-old colt stopped the clock in 1:01 3/5, the ninth fastest of 18 at the distance. Trainer Steve Asmussen called off a scheduled breeze Monday when the Churchill strip came up wet. "It was time for him to do something and move forward, so I just put it off a couple of days until I was comfortable with the surface, and he worked really well," Asmussen said. Tiz Wonderful, winner of last year's GII Kentucky Jockey Club S., was sidelined in January with a tendon injury. His first work since returning was a half-mile move in :53 1/5 on June 4, followed by easy five-furlong works in 1:05 4/5 June 11 and 1:05 June 18. The July 29 GII Jim Dandy S. at Saratoga is the goal for the colt.

Keeneland September 2007 will bring Spin Master's half sister by Silver Deputy for consignment by Bluewater Sales.  Spin Master (04 c Distorted Humor - S.S. Miracle) most recently won the Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs by 2-3/4 lengths.  He has a record of 4-3-0-0 with earnings of over $103,000.

Zanjero (2005 Keeneland September) to run in the 2007 Kentucky Derby  -  “We haven’t walked over there when we didn’t think we were leading the best horse, and that’s what you’re dealing with,” Asmussen said. “We’re not running against history. We’re running against who they load up. We feel great about who he is and where he’s at.”

The Louisville Journal's Jennie Rees writes:

"Zanjero is being chatted up as a great value play to hit the board at possibly 40-1 in the 20-horse field. He has never been worse than third in six two-turn races, including a win at a Churchill allowance race last fall."

Rees points out that Zanjero has faced some of the leading Derby candidates: second in the Grade II Remsen to Nobiz Like Shobiz, third in the Louisiana Derby won by Circular Quay and third in Keeneland's Grade I Blue Grass Stakes to Dominican and champion Street Sense.

"He's the kind of colt who tries, gives you everything he has, and I think the distance is definitely in his favor," said jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, who is 2 for 2 on the colt.

Wild Desert possible for Classic after private deal (Fasig-Tipton July 2003)
Posted on thoroughbredtimes.com at: 10/18/2006 1:55:21 PM

Daniel Borislow has sold an interest in Meadowlands Breeders' Cup Stakes (G2) runner-up Wild Desert to IEAH Stable, and the four-year-old Wild Rush colt will be considered for the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) on November 4 at Churchill Downs.

Borislow retained a controlling interest in the 2005 Queen's Plate Stakes winner, according to Michael Sherack, IEAH's vice president of investor relations.

"There are several partners in the horse and they are kind of exchanging ideas right now, but obviously the Classic and the Clark [Handicap (G1) on November 24 at Churchill] would have to be considered," Sherack said.

IEAH also will consider the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) for Bryan Station Stakes winner Kip Deville, although he is not currently nominated to the Breeders' Cup program.

Sherack said Woodbine Mile Stakes (Can-G1) runner-up Rebel Rebel (Ire) will probably use the Morvich Handicap (G3) on October 29 at Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park as his final prep race for the Hong Kong Mile (HK-G1) on December 10 at Sha Tin racecourse.—Jeff Lowe

10/5/06 - '05-Unacloud, half-sister to recent Matron Stakes (gr. I) winner Meadow Breeze provided an exciting ending to the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern fall yearling sale Wednesday, topping the auction with her $220,000 price late during the third and final session in Maryland. Sean Magee, acting on behalf of his former employer, Florida pinhooker Nick De Meric, signed the sale ticket for the strapping gray filly from the first crop of the grade II-winning stallion Kafwain. De Meric, reached by telephone, said the filly was for "a client from the Northeast who wants to remain low key."

The filly's expensive price was one of the highlights in a sale that set records for the number of horses sold and gross revenue while increasing its median price from a year ago to its second-highest level ever. However, the average price dropped, ending a four-year growth spurt, and the buy-back rate rose significantly...

De Meric and his wife, Jaqui, became acquainted with the sale-topping Kafwain filly when they broke her in Florida after she became a $35,000 buy-back at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July select yearling sale. Meadow Breeze did not win the Matron until Sept. 23. While the important update in her pedigree made Meadow Breeze's half-sister more attractive as an investment, De Meric and his wife also were impressed by the yearling's conformation and how well she handled herself during the breaking process.

"We liked her balance and her athleticism, but we also liked her attitude" de Meric said. "She's not one to back out of a situation, but she's not overly aggressive. She has a rugged constitution, but she's feminine in her deportment."

Bluewater Sales, as agent, consigned the filly to both the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July sale and the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic auction. The sale topper is out of the 9-year-old unraced Unaccounted For mare Unacloud.

"I'm very pleased," said Bluewater's Levy of the filly's price. "The update made the big difference. She's the same filly physically, but she filled out a little more. She was tall and looked like she would need a little more time in July and just fell through the cracks. Then, when her 2-year-old half-sister won a grade I, she looked a lot more appealing."

09/23/06 - Meadow Breeze Blows Away Matron at 34-1.                       BloodHorse posted 09/23/06 at 6:04:14 pm.

Meadow Breeze, the '04 chestnut filly by Meadowlake out of Unacloud, finished out 2006 with a record of 9-4-1-0 and earnings over $278,000.  She won her maiden in her first start by 9 1/2 lengths on 06/01/06.  On 09/23/06 she made her graded stakes debut in the 100th running of the $250,000 Matron (G1) at Belmont Park.  After going off at 34-1 she won by a head.  On 11/03/06 she again ran a strong race to win the My Trusty Cat Stakes.

Keeneland September Yearling Sale: 9/16/06 - Bluewater Sales had the top priced filly of the day at Keeneland as Hip # 1389, an attractive bay filly by Maria's Mon - River Cache brought $400,000.  The bay filly is a half sister to multiple stakes winner Sentimental Charm, and is out of the unraced Unbridled mare River CacheShe was purchased by Jay Em Ess Stable. We wish them the best of racing luck.

Owner funds race to bring Fairmount Park recognition~
Inaugural $250,000 St. Louis Derby set for August 26
Posted: 8/21/2006 4:17:55 PM ~ Thoroughbred Times

Jeff Cooper has been in the Thoroughbred business for only four years, but the East Alton, Illinois, lawyer is already making an impact on the industry, particularly at his home track, Fairmount Park, in nearby Collinsville.Cooper, who owns Circle C Group Stables with longtime friend Jean Kabbendjian, is providing primary funding for the inaugural $250,000 St. Louis Derby on August 26.It will be the richest race ever run at the track, which is located about ten miles east of St. Louis, and one of the ten richest stakes in a state known for its Chicago-area racing. Likely starters among the 34 nominations for the 1 1/16-mile dirt race include Arkansas Derby (G2) winner Lawyer Ron, Iowa Derby winner More Than Regal, and Peter Pan Stakes (G2) runner-up Lewis Michael."It looks like Lawyer Ron will run, and that should be fun and really raise the profile of the race," Cooper said. "We always wanted to do something to help Fairmount Park."Circle C started with claiming horses but quickly moved on to buying at public auctions, and the stable now numbers about 28. Its best horse so far has been Ex Caelis, who finished second in the Darley Alcibiades Stakes (G2) and Arlington-Washington Breeders' Cup Lassie Stakes (G3) and fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) last year.

"I'm still in counseling, trying to recover," Cooper joked when asked about the filly's last-place finish in the Kentucky Oaks (G1).

Circle C employs trainer Tom Trione Jr. locally and still calls Fairmount its base. Nationally, Circle C has horses with Dallas Stewart, D. Wayne Lukas, Bill Mott, Todd Pletcher, and Rebecca Maker. The stable keeps its breeding stock and layups at Meg Levy's Bluewater Farm in Lexington.

High Finance a Possible for Belmont

High Finance (FTKJULY 2004 Bluewater Graduate)
a two-time winner this spring for trainer Rick Violette Jr., is currently under consideration for the Belmont Stakes. A colt by Talk Is Money, High Finance owns two wins, a pair of seconds and a third from five starts. On Sunday, he breezed one mile over Belmont's main track in 1:38.49.

"He breezed really well and right now we're seriously considering (the Belmont Stakes,)" Violette said. "We know it's a huge step up, but it's a wide open race and nobody knows whose going to get a mile and a half. His breeze was really spectacular. He went the last eighth in 11 and change."

After breaking his maiden by more than nine lengths on April 15 at Keeneland, High Finance put forth his best effort to date on May 4 at Belmont, winning an entry-level allowance by five lengths. Although the "in control from start" comment he earned that day is impressive, fans shouldn't forget that he broke through the starting gate prior to the race.

"I thought he beat a really good field and he showed he was faster than those horses," Violette said.

Sizzling Sinister Minister Steals Blue Grass

Last Updated: 4/17/2006 2:48:25 PM ~Bloodhorse

Going, going, going, gone!

Sinister Minister poured on the speed on a speed-favoring track and ran away with the $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) Saturday at Keeneland, earning a May 6 trip to the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).

Even though he broke in the air from the No. 7 post, the 8-1 shot was two lengths in front after a quarter mile, seven in front after a half-mile, and eight ahead at the stretch call. The son of Old Trieste galloped home, flashing under the wire with a 12 3/4-length advantage, the third-widest winning margin in 82 runnings of the Blue Grass. Only Arts and Letters' 15-length romp in 1969 and Alydar's 13-length stroll in 1978 were more commanding.

Sinister Minister's time for the 1 1/8 miles of 1:48.85 was the fastest since Millennium Wind clocked 1:48.32 in 2001.

"I was hoping he would really pour it on today, so it was pretty exciting," said winning trainer Bob Baffert. "He's a free-running horse, and you can't rate him. He just takes off fast. This horse, I just think he's waking up at the right time. I don't think Brother Derek can get in front of this guy; I don't think he wants to."

Ridden by Garret Gomez, Sinister Minister rolled through the first quarter mile in :22.91 and ripped off a half in :45.88

Congratulations to Jeanne and Mike Owens who bred Sinister Minister in Kentucky.

Five Star Day Colt Sizzles in Keeneland Under Tack Show- bloodhorse 4/11/06

The Five Star Day colt from the Elser's Kirkwood Stables consignment lost the right side iron from his saddle, leaving his rider, Dale Lynch, balancing precariously. But the gray or roan juvenile still managed to turn in the day's fastest work at a quarter mile, covering the distance in :20 3/5 on Keeneland's main track.

The colt is out of the 16-year-old stakes-winning Relaunch mare Authorized Staff. She is a full sister to stakes-placed Bill Back, who is the dam of grade I winner House Party (by French Deputy). Authorized Staff's other offspring include the winner Dayton's Bluff (by Lord At War).
